Taking a taxi can be intimidating the first time, but it needn’t be. Here are a few tips to increase your comfort level.

First, do not go running past someone who has been waiting to grab the next taxi. Be polite and wait your turn. Another one will come along soon.

You may want to share a fare with another, even a stranger, to save money or get out of rain or snow faster. When sharing a fare, it is appropriate to split the cost.

If you and a friend are sharing a taxi to go to similar locations, the first person to arrive at their destination should pay half of the fare and tip, rather than leaving the last person to arrive with the full amount.

The easiest way to do this is for the first person to get out of the car to provide cash to the remaining passenger. While you may feel the temptation to refuse the cash, don’t. This can sometimes create a feeling of obligation to pay you back next time, which can be awkward.

Proper courtesy is generally for the man to ride in the front of the taxi and the woman to get in the back, but this can be flexible, particularly is the woman is wearing a long skirt and may have trouble getting in the back.
