Have you ever wondered about hybrid cars? They certainly look stylish and modern, but what is it about them that makes them so different and so special? After all, most cars look the same these days, do they not? Different models have different methods of creating this electricity, but they are all very hi-tech and very effective.

When the car’s internal computers decide that the car no longer needs the power of the internal combustion engine, it will turn it off and switch to the electric motor instead. The circumstances where this might happen are, for example, when you are driving slowly in inner-city traffic, when you are cruising at moderate speed on a flat motorway or when you are going down hill. This saves a considerable amount of fuel, which is clearly a great saving to you.

However, there are occasions when you have to have more power than the batteries can supply you, for example, when accelerating hard, when overtaking or when climbing a hill. At times such as these, the electric motor will shut down and the combustion engine will take over and start supplying power to the accelerator and electricity to the batteries. When the requirement for extra power has ceased, the batteries will take over again.

These choices are all taken by the hybrid electric vehicle’s (HEV’s) on board computer system and you will not be aware of much other that a surge of power or a quietening of the propulsion system. This works very well in most scenarios, but some drivers of HEV’s would like to have a manual override for abnormal circumstances, such as an undulating terrain.

All in all, cars with hybrid electric engines work very well at reducing fuel bills but they are still too dear to be much more than a gimmicky toy and a salve to the conscience for the well-to-do.

Causes Of A Flat Car Battery

You get into your car and turn the key, but instead of the engine firing into life, nothing happens. You then realise that you have a flat car battery. If it’s something simple like you forgot to turn off the lights, a short time hooked up to a car battery charger will make everything ok again. If there is no obvious reason for the battery being flat, this is more of a problem.

If there’s no obvious cause for the flat battery, such as the lights being left on, it could be that the alternator is not charging the car’s battery. This could be because the alternator, the component which generates charge for the car battery, is faulty or the belt which drives the alternator is slipping.

A way to quickly check your alternator is to start your engine then switch the headlights on. Pressing the accelerator should cause the headlights to shine more brightly. If they stay the same brightness this means that the alternator is probably faulty.

Car batteries last for a few years and then need replacing, so if the battery is faulty it could be that it is just too old. The useful life of a battery depends on how you use the car, with short trips charging the batteries less fully than longer trips. Batteries which do not get fully charged between trips will not last as long as ones which get fully charged. If you do short trips, using a car battery charger now and then to fully charge the battery will extend its life.

The battery can be tested by using a voltmeter. The red voltmeter lead should touch the positive battery terminal and the black lead should touch the negative terminal. With the engine off, the voltmeter reading should be between 12.5 and 12.8 volts. With the engine running the voltage should increase to between 13.6 and 14.3 volts. If the reading does not change it means that the alternator is probably faulty.

If you are having problems with starting, this could also be due to loose connections on the battery terminals. Check both connections at the battery terminals to make sure that they are tight. It is a good idea to also check for corrosion between the terminals on the battery and the connections. If there’s any corrosion, clean the corrosion off, re-connect the terminals and apply some grease or petroleum jelly to the top of the connections to keep out moisture.

Exhaust smoke should be clear once the car has warmed up, if it is not this can indicate problems with the engine.

Check the steering during the test drive, make sure it responds properly and does not make any unusual noises. Test the brakes too, if you hear unusual noises when braking this indicates problems, usually brakes do not cost much to repair.

Check that all gadgets and anything electrical, such as the lights, central locking and air-conditioning are working. Electrical problems can be very difficult to fix, so they can be expensive to solve.
